All of our undergraduate degrees feature the option in the third year to either undertake a work placement in the UK or abroad for 12 months, or to go on study exchange, with or without a shorter placement.
Businesses gain great benefits by taking placement students and having them work for the organisation, and in the same we we rely on the input from businesses to help our students have a valuable placement experience.
Placements give students the opportunity to put into practice, in a business context and environment, the theory and academic knowledge gained on their course. No two placements are the same but, in general terms, students should be given work which challenges their abilities and stretches their imagination; they should also be provided with opportunities to use initiative and take ownership of certain responsibilities and tasks.
Students are paid by the employer for the duration of the placement period and are subject to the usual terms offered by the organisation. Advice on our expectations of employers and current salaries is available, on request, from the Placement Office.
Whilst a student is on placement a tutor from Kingston Business School or Kingston Law School will visit at least once to review progress with the student and their manager, and also report on the student’s work and experience. The tutor can also be available to discuss with the organisation any further partnerships for business development that may have been identified as a need – the development could be a tailored short course for employees, or a research project.
