Pre-Sessional English Language Course

Business & Law's pre-sessional English language courses will develop your English language skills, preparing you for your chosen Masters level study in Business and Law programmes at Kingston University. It is ideal for students who have been made an offer for Masters level study in Business and Law, but have not yet achieved the necessary English language level.

Minimum English language entry levels

All non-UK applicants must meet our English language requirements. Students will be offered places on the Business & Law Pre-Sessional English course according to their existing level of English and the English entry requirements for their masters programme. See the box below for details of our minimum English language entry requirements.

Course dates

The full time, intensive Business & Law Pre-Sessional English depending on your English language level (see box above) is either 10 or 5 weeks long (from 1st October to 21st December or 12th November to 21st December 2012). The Business & Law January programmes begin on 21st January 2013.

What will you study?

The course will:

  • develop your academic English skills for Business and Law studies
  • develop your academic study skills for success at university, particularly in the area of Business and Law
  • familiarise you with the learning and teaching methods used in Business and Law studies at a British University
  • introduce you to Kingston, London, and the surrounding area

The course consists of a full time programme of student centred, interactive classes; lectures; guided and independent study sessions, and individual tutorials.  Classes in writing, reading, speaking and listening for Business and Law studies are held weekdays from 9:00 – 16:00 and students are expected to study independently outside of class time for 10 hours per week.

Assessment

Students are formatively assessed through regular coursework, and summatively assessed on 5 assignments which test writing, reading, speaking and listening.
Our assessments are recognised by the UKBA therefore students are not required to take an IELTS test at the end of the course.

Progressing to your main Business or Law masters degree

Students must pass the Business & Law Pre-Sessional English Course in order to progress to their masters programme.  To pass, students must:

  • attend a minimum of 80% of the course starting from the first day of the course.
  • achieve an overall grade *equivalent to the English entry level for their masters programme.

* IELTS 6.5 = 50% overall; and a minimum of 30% in Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.

Facilities

The course is based in the Kingston Hill and Penrhyn Road campuses. Students can use the University’s facilities during their course.  This includes computing facilities, a Language Lab, a fitness centre, and any of the four learning resource centres, which have an extensive number of books, print journals and electronic journals, specialist collections, private study areas and wireless networks for laptop use.

How to apply

Once you have an offer for your masters programme, please complete this application form for the Business & Law Pre-Sessional English Course. Make sure you attach ALL the documents required.

  • Copy of passport and current visa (if you have one)
  • JPG photograph
  • Approved English Language Certificate (e.g. IELTS, TOEFLiBT or PTE)
  • Academic qualifications
  • Personal email and mobile/telephone number where we can contact you (include all the required International dialling codes necessary).
  • Non-refundable registration fee

Once the registration fee is received, the course documentation will be sent out with a confirmation letter for visa purposes. Applications are accepted by post and email.

When to apply

  • Students who do not require a Tier 4 visa should apply at least one month before the course start date.
  • We recommend that students who require a Tier 4 visa apply 8 weeks before the course start date.  It is important to check visa processing times in your country and apply early enough to obtain a visa. Students who obtain their visa late may not be allowed to start the Business & Law Pre-Sessional English course.
  • Late applications will only be accepted if places on the course are still available and if we consider the student has time to obtain a visa.

Accommodation

Students may be able to have Kingston University halls accommodation for the duration of this course.
