Business & Management

Our wide range of business and management courses offer a broad selection of topics including finance, marketing, human resource management, operations management and more. The first year of all business courses is the same ensuring everyone is on equal footing. During your second and third year you will have the option to further specialise in your area of interest depending on your choice of modules.

There is an opportunity to practice your newly acquired knowledge and skills at a work placement and gain that all important edge needed in the current economy thanks to our excellent links with employers.

  • Business Administration BBA(Hons)


    Why choose this course?

    This Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) course aims to develop competent managers who are capable of working in a contemporary international context. It provides a broad but comprehensive business and management programme with an international focus.

    You can choose to follow either a three or four-year route, depending on whether you want to take a third-year study exchange abroad or a final year work placement. If you change your mind, you can switch routes before you start your third year.

    Students who have completed two years of a similar course overseas can transfer to the final years of this degree. The final two years of the four-year route include the chance to undertake a placement in the UK.

    What will you study?

    In the first two years, you will study a broad range of business subjects, including:

    • finance;
    • marketing;
    • human resource management;
    • operations management;
    • trends in the international business environment; and
    • an optional foreign language.

    You consolidate and enhance your studies in the third year, examining strategic management issues and studying an international business subject in depth. You may also be able to gain some knowledge and skills in management consultancy. You can choose to specialise in a particular business functional area through your choice of elective modules.

    In the optional fourth year you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills to a real business organisation by undertaking a work placement. Building on this experience, you will develop an in-depth knowledge of a relevant business and management issue by writing a business administration management report.

  • Business and Law Administration FdA


    Why choose this course?

    If you work as an administrator in a legal environment and would like to develop your skills and gain an academic qualification, this course is ideal. It has been developed with employers to provide career-oriented skills and knowledge. A key feature of the course is that aspects of your workplace role will be incorporated into the curriculum.

    Depending on your academic achievement, you can top up your qualification to a full honours degree via further part-time study.

    What will you study?

    You will cover the main business disciplines and gain an understanding of finance, law and human resource management. You will carry out work-based learning assessments to develop your ability to apply your knowledge in practical situations. The curriculum includes two 'Legal Environment' modules, which will enable you to:

    • develop a general knowledge and understanding of the legal context within which business and other organisational activity operates; and
    • develop a more detailed knowledge and understanding of at least one substantive area of law.

     

  • Business and Professional Administration FdA


    Why choose this course?

  • Business BA/BSc (Hons) Joint Hons


    Why choose this course?

    Kingston's joint honours field in Business enables you to explore a subject from the arts, social sciences or sciences alongside your business studies.The curriculum provides a broad coverage of business topics, with a wide range of option modules in the final year.

    Depending on whether you choose to study Business as a half or minor field, four or three of the eight modules you take each year will be from the business field. You will be registered with the faculty running the field you choose to combine with Business.

    What will you study?

    Alongside your studies in your second subject, you will cover areas of business such as marketing, human resource management, business computing, corporate strategy and accounting. You will develop the ability to analyse business management issues and come up with solutions. You will also learn to evaluate and appraise recent research and consultancy.

    This degree is ideal if you want to follow a broad business and management programme rather than specialise in one particular business area. It also caters for students who wish to complete a general business degree in three years without a placement element. The course will provide you with a broad, deep and integrated understanding of the main business functions within a modern, international context.

    You will study a broad range of business areas, including finance, marketing, human resources management and operations management. You will examine the trends in the international business environment and look at strategic management issues. You can choose to study a foreign language or include an overseas study exchange/work placement within the degree.

  • Business Management Practice BA(Hons) top-up


    Why choose this course?

    This part-time course enables you to top up your foundation degree or HND to a BA(Hons)-level qualification via open-learning and work-related coursework. The course is designed for those who work or have worked as an administrator in any type of organisation.

    What will you study?

    You will study four core modules and two option modules. You will learn about leadership and management, strategic management and human resources. You will also undertake a work-based research project, which is assessed through the submission of a 12–15,000 word report, and choose from a variety of option modules.

  • Business Studies BA(Hons)


    Why choose this course?

    This degree combines a thorough grounding in the key business disciplines with the chance to undertake a 12-month work placement. It provides a balance of academic theory and practical application, equipping you with the skills to handle the challenges faced by today's managers.

    What will you study?

    You will study the principles of economics and how they impact on business; law; and the role of accounting in business reporting and decision-making. You will then explore a range of business functions, including human resource management, marketing and finance.

    In your final year you will focus on strategic issues. You can select your option modules to either specialise in a particular area of business or remain a generalist. Your studies, combined with your work experience, will develop your management, numeracy, communication and teamworking skills.

  • Business with Accounting BA(Hons)


    Why choose this course?

    This course is ideal if you want to study business with an emphasis on accounting. It combines a sound grounding in general business studies with a detailed focus on financial and management accounting. You can choose to follow the course as a three-year programme or spend an additional year on a work placement and/or a study exchange.

    What will you study?

    You will gain a broad foundation of business knowledge, including business information technology, statistical analysis, organisation behaviour, marketing, operations management and law. You will cover financial and management accounting topics, including preparing and interpreting company financial statements, and constructing and analysing financial information for management. In your final year, you will also study strategic management.

    You can use the optional placement year to apply the knowledge and skills you have gained, as well as to develop
    new career skills. Alternatively you could use this year to undertake an overseas study exchange.

  • Business with Law BA(Hons)


    Why choose this course?

    This degree is designed to meet the growing need for managers who understand the links between business activities and legal processes. You will gain a broad knowledge of business with a specialism in law.

    You can choose to take either an additional one-year work placement or study exchange abroad.
     

    What will you study?

    You will study a range of business topics, such as accounting, economics, information systems,marketing, human resource management, and operations management. In your final year you will also study strategic management.

    Law topics include an overview of the English legal system, the law of contract, and the law of obligations (tort law).

    The optional work placement year gives you the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills you have gained, as well as develop new career skills. Alternatively you could use the year to undertake an overseas study exchange.

  • International Business BA(Hons)


    Why choose this course?

    This is a three-year degree course with the option to extend it to four years by taking part in a study exchange in Europe, the United States or Hong Kong. The programme aims to address the need for graduates who can function in an international business environment, and will prepare them for careers with organisations that do business across national borders.

    What will you study?

    In addition to covering the basic business functions, the curriculum includes international dimensions and implications for management, explores relevant issues of culture and develops foreign language competence. The languages currently on offer for study are:

    • French;
    • German;
    • Italian;
    • Japanese;
    • Mandarin;
    • Spanish; and
    • English (for non-native speakers).

    Although no previous language ability is necessary, students with A-level ability in French, German or Spanish will be able to pursue their language studies from that starting point. You can also choose to study this course as a joint honours programme with law or with French/Spanish.
