John Tribe

PGCE KPMG Lecturer in Restructuring - Full Time School Of Law Room 418 Law School Kingston University Kingston Hill Kingston Upon Thames Surrey KT2 7LB Biography Following completion of his LL.M. at University College London where he was awarded the Joseph Hume Scholarship in Law, John was appointed to his first academic post at Kingston Law School in August 2003 as a Lecturer in Law. He has subsequently been promoted to Senior Lecturer in Law (2004) and KPMG Lecturer in Restructuring (2007). John maintains a bankruptcy, insolvency and corporate rescue blog and is on the Executive of the Society of Legal Scholars and convenes the Open Subject Section at the Annual Conference having taken over the Gibraltar section from Professor Bradney in November 2009. John's principal research interest is English personal insolvency law and policy. He completed the Bankruptcy Courts Survey 2005 (BCS - citation below) for the Insolvency Service. This work led to an invitation to address the Scottish Parliament's Enterprise and Culture Committee on the 7th March 2006 on the effects of the Enterprise Act 2002 in England and Wales. In 2007 John completed a second major research project for the Insolvency Service and Grant Thornton LLP entitled Personal Insolvency Law in England and Wales: Debtor Advice, Debtor Education and the Credit Environment (PIP - citation below). Work in Progress The abstracts and 'working paper' versions of several of the following can be found on the Social Science Research Network Articles "The Poulson Bankruptcy of the early 1970s" "Discharge in Personal Insolvency: A Critical Examination" Teaching John lectures on company law on the LLB and LLM and on insolvency law on the LLM. He also lectures on Equity & Trusts on the LLB, GDL and PGDL and takes tutorials for company law, insolvency law and equity and trusts at Kingston University.
John has also taught company law as a visiting lecturer at Beijing Normal University, Peoples' Republic of China, in November 2004 and in April 2006. He also taught insolvency law at undergraduate and postgraduate level as a guest teacher at the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London, in the Lent term 2008 covering Professor Finch's sabbatical. John was short-listed (one of five candidates) for the Law Teacher of the Year Award 2008. John obtained a PGCE in 2004. John is an external examiner at the Cass Business School, City University and at Anglia Ruskin University, Anglia Law School and a member of Kingston University's Faculty of Business and Law Research Committee and a co-opted member of the Faculty Quality Enhancement Committee (regarding Turnitin). As part of my funded KPMG Lectureship in Restructuring I am in frequent contact with partners at the firm in relation to 'Thought Leadership' position papers and essays. I have also submitted joint responses to Government consultations with partners from the firm. Membership/Memberships John has been elected to the Executive of the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS). The SLS is the learned society for those who teach law in a university or similar institution or who are otherwise engaged in legal scholarship. As of Spring 2009 the Society had over 3,100 members consisting of academic and practising lawyers in a wide variety of subject areas. The Society was founded in 1908 and has charitable status. It celebrates its centenary in 2009. The Executive Committee manages the affairs of the Society and consists of nine members. John commences his three year term in October 2009.
