Biography

Born in the Netherlands in 1967, I have lived in the UK for over 20 years. I have been working at Kingston University since 2002.

Research Interest(s)

My principal research interest is the history of economic thought and business thought. My specialist period is 18th century France and Britain.

My most recent book, published in June 2015, is about the writings of the mysterious and brilliant Irish speculator Richard Cantillon (1687?-1734?). His Essay on the Nature of Trade in General, considered as the first treatise of economics, was actually published in three version during the 1750s. My book is the first variorum edition of the Essay comparing the three published versions as well as manuscript versions. For further information see http://www.tandf.net/books/details/9781138014589/

Amongst the other topics I am interested in are early mathematical contributions to economic theory and in 2006 I published a book on the French engineer A.N. Isnard (1748-1803) who was the first to use a system of simultaneous equations to study the theory of value. Related is my interest in the Tableau economique. Together with Professor A.E. Steenge (University of Groningen) I have proposed a new interpretation of Francois Quesnay's famous Tableau.

I am further interested in the perceived differences and relations, according to Enlightenment authors, between practical and theoretical economic knowledge. One aspect of this wider theme is the history of business education in Britain.

In 2013 I was awared the History of Economic Analysis Award. This is an annual prize awarded by the European Society for the History of Economic Thought for the best journal article in the field of history of economic thought.  The crowned article is called "Something wonderful and incomprehensible in their oeconomy": The English versions of Richard Cantillon's Essay on the Nature of Trade in General'. For a free copy of this article, click here:
