Biography

Vladlena Benson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Accounting, Finance and Informatics, Kingston University. Having completed her PhD at the University of Texas at Dallas, Vladlena's research interests are in the area of information strategy, educational technology, information privacy and social networking. She publishes widely and her research is recognised by the British Computing Society(BCS) and the British Academy of Management  (BAM). Vladlena authored and edited a number of books published around the world. She publishes extensively in such journals as International Journal of Human -Computer Studies, Information Technology and People, Computers in Human Behavior, British Journal of Educational Technology, International Journal of e-Business and others. Dr Benson has served as a Course Director for the BSc International Business, Business Administration( including provision in India) and most recently the MA Management programmes. 

 

Expertise

Dr Benson's research focuses on personal information privacy online, trust formation, social networking behaviour and social commerce. Educational technology has always occupied an important place in Vladlena's expertise both as a practitioner and researcher. Her latest book " Cutting Edge Technologies including Social Media in Higher Education"  has been received positively by the academic community.  Vladlena's  supervision of PhD students is centred on mentoring and supporting younger researchers and allowed her to develop innovative approaches to research in the areas of digital behaviour, brought about by the advance and spread of digital technology, including social media. Vladlena supervises PhD students and their recent topics include: " Metrics for the Performance Improvement with Social Technologies", "Unexpected pathways through social commerce sites"," Information privacy and victimisation through social networks" and others.

Vladlena publishes her research on digital behaviour in well renown journals such as Technology Forecasting and Social Change, Information Technology and People, Computers in Human Behavior, International Journal of Human Computer Studies, British Journal of Educational Technology and others. Recent refereeing duties include top Information Systems journals, such as Information  Systems Journal; Studies in Higher Education; Computers in Human Behavior; ; and (ii) Conference papers  from the British Academy of Management (BAM). Vladlena is chairing the 15th European Conference on Research Methods: Reframing methodology in the networked world ( ECRM2016).

Research Interest(s)

Vladlena completed her PhD at the University of Texas at Dallas in the area of Internet databases, which influenced her research interest in the Internet technology and its applications in various areas of human activity. Upon joining Kingston Business school Vladlena’s  research activity was focused on innovation in learning and teaching through technology and social networking applications. Vlaldena  publishes extensively and has authored peer-reviewed chapters in edited books by national and international publishers; presented peer-reviewed conference publications.  Vladlena continues to contribute to the research community through serving as a member of editorial boards of top journals in her field: Studies in Higher Education; Information Systems Journal; Computers in Human Behaviour. Dr Benson’s research outputs in the area of eLearning and Social Media are archived in the KU research repository exceeding 40 entries.  Vladlena’s publication history includes national and international peer-reviewed journals, books, edited books, book chapters and conference papers (Google Scholar report)

Teaching

Vladlena launched her career as an educator and researcher at Kingston Business School in 2004 with a focus on advancing the quality of higher education and helping students achieve higher and build better careers. Her research-informed teaching and PhD students supervision is focused on Digital Behaviour . Vladlena undertook curriculum development initiatives and leads modules on the innovative aspects of digital strategy, IT Governance, Agile methodologies and Emerging Technologies. Vladlena continues to contribute to the effective delivery of up to date programmes accredited nationally and internationally. She teaches Information Management Strategy to MBA students in the UK and Russia, and is involved on a number of European programmes, including the International MBA programme at France and a Doctorate Programme in Italy.

Dr Vladlena Benson was the Director of the MA in Management programme in 2012-2015, and the Course Director for several undergraduate programmes: International Business, Business Administration, their provision in Mumbai, India. She has held quality assurance and research-related external examining posts for UK Universities and private international colleges.

Consultancy

Having worked with networking companies during her PhD studies, Vladlena maintains a strong focus on the information security. She has achieved BSI Certified Information Security Management Practitioner status and completed Certificate in Cybersecurtiy Risk Assessment and Management. Her  strengths as an expert in online digital behaviour are based on extensive experience and  professional practice. One of her latest projects focuses on the awareness of the implications of social media footprint for professional reputation and commercial activity on social platforms.
