Yannis joined Kingston Business School as a Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship and Innovation in September 2014. He teaches entrepreneurial finance and innovation and his research interests include venture capital, business angels, start up creation and crowdfunding. Yannis also manages on behalf of Kingston University, the INNOGROW project, an ERASMUS+ EU funded project which aims to develop innovative ‘learning path’ methods for innovative entrepreneurs. Aside from his academic work, Yannis provides consultancy support to the World Bank’s InfoDev program, which helps innovative ventures through a global network of business innovation centers that assists early-stage entrepreneurs—offering mentoring, facilities, and seed funding.
Before joining Kingston, Yannis worked as an Innovation Consultant for The World Bank, Finance and Private Sector Development Department in Europe and Central Asia and as a Senior Expert for multimillion EU Pre-Accession Assistance projects. He was previously Head of Investments Research at NESTA, the UK Innovation Agency (London, UK), and before that he worked in Intrasoft International (Luxembourg) and in Cardiff Business School. He received his PhD from Cardiff University in 2012. His thesis examined the role of different types of venture capital, public and private, in fostering innovation at the regional level.
Between 2007 -2013, Yannis was Head of Investment Research at NESTA, where he designed, led and disseminated NESTA’s work on investments for innovation and extensively published research and industry reports in the area of innovation finance. He conducted due diligence on potential investment target sectors and assisted senior executives in formulating the VC fund investment strategy. In several occasions he advised the UK Department of Business Innovation and Skills, the UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) department, No 10, and the UK Treasury on issues related to innovation finance. Between 2009-2011 he worked together with Professor Josh Lerner, Harvard University, on an 18 month empirical research project that assessed the performance of VC funds and its drivers.
He has delivered numerous presentations, public speeches and executive workshops in entrepreneurship, innovation finance and economic growth and has participated in expert working groups and seminars organized by the UK Department of Business Innovation and Skills and the European Commission.
Yannis’ research interests includes entrepreneurship, innovation, venture capital, crowdfunding and business angels finance.
