Audley Genus won a joint studentship from the ESRC/EPSRC, which allowed him to undertake and successfully complete a PhD at Aston University (between 1987-1991, supervised by Dr David Collingridge). His doctoral research was on the topic of energy technology policy and innovation related to UK North Sea oil. Since then Audley has pursued research on innovation and institutional change in the (renewable) energy sector and sustainable production and consumption. He left Aston University in 1993 to take up a lectureship at Brunel University and then later worked at Royal Holloway, University of London. Audley spent most of the 2000s at Newcastle University, where he was subject group leader for innovation. He has been at Kingston University - and a professor of innovation - since 2012.

Audley has extensive expertise in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship, technology policy and strategy, and new approaches for stimulating 'green' innovation in firms and communities. He is a member of the Sustainable Consumption Research and Action Initiative (SCORAI) Europe consortium which has been awarded 3.2 million euro for its three-year 'ENERGISE' project which began in December, 2016. (The Kingston University funding for this is over 430,000 euro).

Current projects include: Community Energy in England and Research and Knowledge Exchange for Entrepreneurship in Permaculture (in collaboration with the Permaculture Association, funded by ESRC/Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship). Audley's networks involve a large number of collaborators (including colleagues at Durham University, Newcastle University, Northumbria University, University of Greenwich, Transition Research Network and Sustainable Consumption Research and Action Initiative Europe). With colleagues in these networks Audley has worked on a range of projects (which have been funded by AHRC, the EU Interreg initiative, and RCUK/Wellcome Trust).

Audley has extensive expertise in conference and workshop organisation and facilitation. He was a member of the Organising Committee of the GRF conference, held in Shanghai, China, June 2014. In 2014, on behalf of SCORAI Europe, Audley organised and led a two-day workshop on sustainable consumption and production held at the Royal Society of Arts, on which an edited book - Sustainable Consumption: Design, Innovation and Practice - published by Springer is based. He is a co-organiser and chair of the SCORAI Europe/ EU TRANSIT project workshop on sustainability transitions and transformation, held at the Impact Hub in Vienna in November 2015 and a member of the organising committee for the SCORAI conference on sustainable consumption held at the University of Maine, USA in June, 2016.

Audley has extensive experience of reviewing the work of colleagues. He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Technology Analysis and Strategic Managment, and an invited member of the Swedish Research Council 'Formas' on sustainable products and processes.

Audley also has extensive experience of supervising doctoral students to completion - five to date - and examining doctoral and postgraduate theses. He was until recently an external examiner at the Open University.

Research Interest(s)

Audley researches innovation in the renewable energy sector, and the support needs for innovators and entrepreneurs in 'green' SMEs. He is also interested in how universities can better engage with others in society to promote environmental sustainability and innovation.

Innovation; sustainable innovation

Audley is a member of the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology, the British Academy of Management, the Sustainable Development Research Network and the Sustainability Transitions Research Network. Audley is also a member of the steering group of Sustainable Consumption and Research Action Initiative (SCORAI) Europe and the Global Research Forum on sustainable consumption and production.
